Doobally

Church of the Immaculate Conception, Doobally

It is thought that there was a post-Penal Mass house at Tubber in the townland of Moneen where there is a holy well. A new church was built in 1841 not far from the present church while Fr Hugh de Lacy was parish priest of Killinagh. Doobally church area was part of Killinagh parish until 23 August 1969 when it was united with Ballinaglera.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception, situated on an elevated site in the townland of Corrahoosh was started in 1924 and was completed in 1926. It was built with fine cut-stone. The architect was T.F. McNamara from Dublin and the builder was Charles Doyle from Mullingar. Patrick McGibney, a native of Killeshandra and ordained in Salamanca, was curate in Doobally when this church was built. The church was dedicated by Bishop Patrick Finegan on 13 June 1926. This church, rather unusually, had turf-fired central heating. Further work was carried out on the church in 1976 and again in 1986. Money was raised in the United States when it was being built and again in the 1980s when it was refurbished.
