Saint Hugh’s N.S.

Saint Hugh’s N.S. is situated on the outskirts of the village of Dowra. Formerly known as ‘Cornagee N.S.’, it is the sole national school in the Parish of Ballinaglera. Currently the school has two mainstream teachers and a shared Special Education Teacher.

Learning through activity is an important part of the school’s approach to education and we are fortunate to have the resources to facilitate this. In recent years we have transformed a classroominto a ‘STEAM’ room where the pupils can engage in hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, art and maths. Outdoors the pupils enjoy observing and investigating at our wildlife pond and trying their hands at vegetable growing in our polytunnel.

‘The Old School’, which is a refurbished indoor activity area, hosts drama and PE lessons and is the scene of school plays. There is plenty of room for outdoor PE lessons too, with our astroturf and grass pitch, where all the energy is burnt off.

Through the use of technology the pupils are enabled to express their creativity, be it by filming and editing short local history films or producing projects based on curriculum topics.
